History of the Model Train Layout

Some of you may remember Don Hutton who along with his wife Anne, used to live at 74 Maple Ave. Don was a model train enthusiast and over a number of years, he built an impressive HO narrow gauge rail layout in the basement of the cottage.

When the Huttons sold the cottage in 2006 to the Budds, Don decided to leave the train set behind, rather than dismantle it and take it with him (Don’s plan was to built an entirely new train layout at his condo in Toronto).

In 2006, Don’s train layout was about 80% complete. Work remained to be done on the scenery. However he had certainly done all of the hard part, including the basic design, building the train layout tables, the tracks, switches, wiring and some of the scenery.

Over the years since 2006, numerous trips were made to George’s Trains in Markham, and the scenery was completed including several train trestle bridges, a mountain and mountain lake, a photo backdrop, and even a “Jurassic Park” (which was certainly not part of Don Hutton’s original concept for a late 1800’s narrow gauge mountain railroad).

Needless to say, the first thing that the Budd grandchildren want to see when they arrive at the cottage is the train set in operation.

The intention is to have an open house one weekend when Long Point children of all ages can stop by to see the train set in operation.
